Thinking of changing careers.

Hi I live in Meridian, Idaho, where Northwest Lineman's College is located. My wife and in-laws all work for Idaho Power Co., and I'm thinking of attending this college as a way to change careers and get into a job that pays well. Some questions for those that can answer: 1. Did you feel very prepared for your first job after attending your lineman college/school? 2. Does anyone have acrophobia, or is this something you just deal with or get over, like many construction workers? 3. What is expected of Apprentice Linemen by their employer? 4. What do your day-to-day activities range from: for apprentices for journeymen 5. What types of clothing do you wear? I ordered NLC's catalog and all the pix showed long-sleeve shirts, hard hats, long pants, and boots. What brand of boots is most popular? 6. Which employers frequented your school the most? 7. What was your beginning pay (if this is too personal, don't answer)? I know it will be more than what I was making at my last job, so virtually anything will work for me...:) 8. Does your job require you to do a lot of work that may physically inhibit you later in life, such as your back, hands, or knees? 9. How many hours do you typically work in a week: apprentice journeyman 10. What would be the average of someone getting into this career? Lots of questions, but like the subject line says I'm thinking of changing career paths, and this is one of my strongest options I am looking at right now. The next term at NLC begins in September this year and I want to get my stuff in as soon as possible. I'd appreciate any information you may be willing to take the time to share. Thanks, Kris

As far as anyone who questions whether going to a line school to begin their apprenticeship is worth it or not, I've been in a hiring position for some years now and I will always give the line school graduate first consideration and in fact we have not hired anyone in the last couple of years who hasn't been a line school graduate. As for NLC, they are very well trained when they finish as far as a beginning hand goes. The instructors there are very capable linemen themselves and give the students a strong background in procedures etc.

I started with PGE. They suck. I did my apprenticeship and bailed. If anyone including them, will give you an apprenticeship, go for it and give your all. You will be treated like poo poo for 3.5 years. But after that you can smile and say I did it. And I make over 100k a year and have no college. Smile and stay safe.

First of all ,you start your career as either a grunt or an apprentice. There is a fella by the name of Jim Clamp. He specializes in the training and mentoring of apprentices. I attended a grounding seminar at the A.P.P.A Lineman's Rodeo, that Mr. Clamp instructed. He is an excellent instructor, speaker and has alot of compassion for our trade and the human race. Mr. Clamp teaches and instructs for S.M.U.D. which is (very convient for yourself) Sacramento Municipal Utility District in Calif. By the way, April 7-8, 2006 is th dat for next years A.P.P.A. Linemans Rodeo and it is going to b held at the S.M.U.D. facilitys. Wish i had more info on mr. Clamp for you. I like the way he thinks and i think he would be your best option. Good Luck OLd Blue In Texas.

I'm getting ready to graduate from NLC 4/14/04. I heard about this school in NY where I'm from. Linemen there told me it was the best way to jump start my career. I feel I feel I have a sound foundation for a safe and productive career. You also have to understand that the school packs 4 months with 550 ojt hours. I'm in the process of finding the perfect job for me and don't regret coming here at all. Remember when you get here, you'll only get out of the school what you put into it.

Just Enrolled in NLC but am concerned after reading some of the posts on here. I am not as concerned with the tuition (as they are comparable to a university fee) but do have concerns that some think that the graduates are less than desirable for potential apprentice positions. I also understsand that those linemen that went directly into an apprentice position after a few weeks training with their respective company may feel that this is wasted and not needed to succeed. Please share your thoughts.

When did we think it was alright to starve someone to death? It's alright to give death row immates a choice how they would like too end their lives, but Terri has no choice. We are kinder to anomails , and killers, than what we are allowing to this beautiful. Wouldn't it be better to give her back to her family, and let the husband go with his other wife, and children. I always had hope for our world. But how the light grow dem for "Hummanity" Terri blod will be on all of our hands> If you don't speak out , and try too stop this insanity. What's next? Killing children with birth defects. I beg you to speak out before it's to late. Don't carry Terri's blood on your hands. We are still human arent we?

Lineman is correct. The devices in the middle are either dampers or spacer dampers. These are used for bundled conductors to keep them form bouncing into each other and dampen vibrations

Actually, now that I just re-read your question, you said middle of the line, those would be line spacers, where you would have multiple conductors. They do what their name suggests, space out the wire.

I am not an engineer so I couldn't explain exactly what they do or how they work, but as I understand it, they help to preserve the insulators and prevent arcing/flashing. Maybe someone else could help out on that. Somebody please jump in and correct me if I'm wronge. Have a good one.

I have also seen larger, wing-shaped devices in the middle of the lines between the suspension points. I always thought those were dampers. What are they for? Perhaps they are there to damp out large amplitude standing waves and the dumbells next to the insulators are there to damp out small amplitude vibrations. Is that right? Thanx for the answer.

They are called "dampners" and are used for reducing vibration on conductors caused by wind and such, which in turn helps to prevent loosening of associated hardware (nuts, bolts, clamps).
High Tension Power Line Question
March 19, 2005 06:21:49 PM
Posted by: Curious
There are some very high tension power lines near my home and I have wondered for a long time what some devices I see on them are. The conductors hang from insulators that look to be maybe 3 feet long, and about 1 foot on either side of the insulator there is something that looks like a "dumbell" hanging from the line. They are parallel to the conductor they hang from and there is a pair of these on each phase at each suspension point. Can anyone tell me what these are and why they are there? Thanx.

your best bet to be effective in the trade is to start out as a grunt. call your local union hall and sign the books, beg to get out do whatever. get out there and then see if you like the trade. it's alot different from the ground, if you do like it, then don't, i repeat don't go to tech school. get in there and grunt your way to the top. hey man, if you don't like gettin dirty don't bother with this then, you will hate it!
Help With Some info on a Carear as a lineman
March 09, 2005 05:16:05 AM

Hey guys, I am a 2nd year student at san Jose state and am still thinking of changing majors. I was looking for something more exciting and challenging and the job of a lineman came across from a friend. I have been mechanical all my life and have a common knowledge of electricity but nothing that will probably compete with yours. I am wondering if there is a major or a minor that you would look for in an interview with someone for a job, example, electrical engineering. What can I do now to start to learn more about this job besides looking online because its the same description every time. Does anyone know what the union in the bay area is, mainly east bay? What kind of trade schools are out there, how effective are they, and do you look for a degree or experience when you are hiring someone for the apprentice programs. Any info would be great, please e-mail me with any info you can spare, OmegaSigmaPi@pacbell.net

I think it's only the terminology thats confusing things here, not the simplicity of mind. I've been reading messages between your and rubberglover and I THINK I know what you're talking about, but not 100% sure. You wouldn't think it would be too difficult to standardise some of it, tho....I mean, electricity is electricity where-ever you are in the world, eh ? Good luck with the stray voltage - I've chased one trickle for months - even upsized the tranny - only to find it was caused by an electric fence almost 2 miles away !!!

i didn't realize that the lateral would still be affected by the 3 phase line, since it is, wouldn't grounding at every pole help to eliminate that? also, the poles that we change out w/ c.t.s on them are bad for woodpecker holes, is guess the humming makes em think there are bugs in there! thanks for all your help rubberglover.

..if it is a single phase customer, tapped off a 3 phase line ..harmonics will come into play....as far as c.t."s....that could be the problems ..if you cut the the neutral off, or it has come off the c.t. could possibley put out a voltage that can go to infinity....it will start humming off the pole...
thanks wombat

Posted by: apprentice
okay, rubberglover, that was some useful info. sorry, i thought that harmonics were only in 3 pot banks, i didn't realize that it could affect single phase operations. and yes, my foreman has pointed out to me that the common or main line neutral is bonded to the pole ground then to the down guys then to the water well pipes. alot of the old farmhouses that we are re-uping have c.t.s at the transformer pole, could that have any effect as far as the stray voltage? also, if you reconnect the c.t. in reverse from the way they are tapped originally, the meter will run in reverse, thus lowering the customers light bill,(found that out by experience!)

..common thing here in rual canada, especially on a milking operation..in the barn there is finally tuning electronics..and they need a perfect hormonic balance, harmonics is whats killing our power factor here.. the electronics these days demand it...if all yours nuetrals are good at the transformer pole, try meggering the grounding system from the pole...then try the barn,,, if all is good..see if the ground or nuetral is connecting to a water pipe or septic pipe somewhere...if all troubleshooting fails, there is a divice you can get from a company in Wisconsin, you put it up at the trans. pole and make connection to the the secondary service ..and it will consume any stray voltage... doesn't fix the intial problem...but the cows will give milk again...
Negotiations with multi-billion dollar companies
February 23, 2005 06:21:30 PM
Posted by: Jersey
Our brothers and sisters who work for JCP&L have been reduced to lining up for free food. The up side? The food drive was union sponsored. You can make donations to them on this website: http://www.ibew1298.org/index.htm As a member of Local 1238 who is currently in not-so-encouraging negotiations, I've been trying to keep up on what is going on up North. So far, First Energy doesn't seem to get it, PHI Holdings aka Conectiv Power Delivery(the company I work for) doesn't get it either. Perhaps worse yet, some of the politicians in office won't get "involved". Below is a link to contact anyone from the President to your local government. http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ I've seen a lot of questions on this site from people who are interested in getting into the utility business. If PHI has it's way, those same people won't have retirment medical. Just so you know, we are fighting not to let that happen. As put at one of our meetings, "we don't eat our young". Our unity is extended to our future brothers and sisters. If we are to maintain our current standard of living and look forward to retiring in relative comfort, we need every union brother and sister to speak up now. Otherwise, we may as well be management. Sure wish I could feed into the lighter side on this site, but right now, I'm worried that my $1,100.00 a week job may be reduced to $200.00. That's $10.00 an hour on the picket line and it won't pay the mortgage or my daughter's college tuition next semester. And all because I want to be able to afford to go to the doctor AND feed the cats when I retire, not eat the cat food. If we give in, who's next? Please do what you can for those who have been on strike since December. Through Christmas and despite financial hardship, our brothers and sisters who work for JCP&L have been making a stand for the rest of us. The company is playing on their fears, they are sticking it to them harder now that mortgages are past due and maintaining healthcare is unaffordable. Email politicians, force them to take the side of the people they are supposed to represent. Send a few bucks to help the families of the 1350 members on strike. A recent article in a newspaper up there even suggested "delaying" payment of JCP&L bills........ it's not like they are cutting, right? As my union carptenter brother would say, "I got your back, you got mine, that's what it's all about".... the other thing he would say might get me flagged from this site ; ) And in the future, if you pass any Conectiv workers on strike, beep your horn, let us know that we have your support. Thanks, L

Not an electrician...depends on what the appliance is and if it has an automatic cut-out switch. Or what kind of protection you have on your switchboard. Normally you'd only have to turn it off at the appliance, but if you're not sure about how safe the cord is, then turn it off at the outlet. If you're not sure about the outlet, then unplug it. See any pattern happening here ??? Good rule to FOLLOW when dealing with ANYTHING electrical...if you're not sure, SWITCH IT OFF.

I didn't know who to ask so I figured you guys might know. Is it safe to just leave an adapter/converter/transformer (or whatever those things are called... perhaps they're each different?) in an outlet? Particularly if the appliance it's powering is constantly on, I mean 24/7. If not, should I unplug it when not used, or would simply turning off the appliance suffice? Please help. (:|

Yeah, I know Energex. They do south west Queensland and another company called Ergon Energy look after the rest of the state. Most people overseas like Queensland because of the tropical weather, although the further nother you get, the more likely you are to have get cyclones and tropical storms. And the humidity at certain times of the year is a killer, which is something to keep in mind if you're spending 6-8 hours a day in gloves and slabs. If you're interested in work in Australia, then go have a look at www.careerone.com.au and type in the word lineman in the "keywords" field.

just because you can't work in a non-right to work state, charge sub-standard wages and/or not be self informed that to work in that area, must be union, you are self deluded and are also a crybaby! since unions were instated their primary goal was to include all aspects and fields of the electrical trade, but along the line in our quote-unquote monopoly, there were people who didn't think that our trade deserved as much money as we made per hour, henceforth the rat is born, inasmuch as i believe in our democratic society i also believe that quality in workmanship and preservation of oneself in a unit as a whole is as much fair as it is needed, you are a rat and the people who would see the union go down the proverbial toilet are rats, they only see what benefits them, not their kids or their kids' kids. union keeps this country on it's toes, ever changing, always growing, never stopping. i think that whole link was a load of bull-shit by some candy-ass who couldn't get the bid.

Castigating IBEW as a Money Grabbing Empire
January 01, 2005 12:33:49 AM
Posted by: IBEW no more
I would like to bring to light and it definitely appears to be self-explanatory. Section 4 of the IBEW collective agreement. Section 4 403 Subcontract The union recognizes the Contractor’s rights to contract or subcontract work to another Contractor who is a signatory to this Agreement; Make Note: It has become quite apparent that there is some confusion regarding the collective agreement I had with IBEW. The union was adversely affecting my company’s ability to perform work; the union’s flagrant violation of the collective agreement: leaves me no alternative but to terminate your shoddy union agreement it has no value if you don’t conform to it... I was not allowed to subcontract work from another contractor who was also signatory to this Agreement, The union hall falsely told the other contractor I was not a member of the union and they could not hire me. This was contradicting the union’s collective agreement so that’s when I ended my involvement with IBEW. On the other hand two faced IBEW was telling me I had to hire a $45 per hour union electrician to work on home networks in new construction for residential or else... I didn’t need a $45 per hour electrician to do home networks I preferred to hire computer students they know more about computer networks than electricians. It would appear the unscrupulous union electricians will use Force & Coercion trying to eliminate the competition at the expense of innocent bystanders in the residential market. These irresponsible and unethical activities by certain shoddy IBEW electrical contractors was a good reason to go non-union and when I need an electrician I hire non-union. When I joined the union they said charge 30% more to cover the high wages and third party union costs. Going back to non-union, I reduced my rates by 30% eliminating third party bilking and ridiculously inflated wages for slow shoddy union workers. I now hire students because one student does the work of three IBEW members at a more realistic rate and you get better quality work.
