Don't waste your money and time on a Lineman School. Most of the guys that I have been around who have attended such schools, were lacking any real experience. Go to your local union hall and sign the books as a groundman and apply for the apprenticeship program. By far a better route to becoming a qualified lineman. . . Good luck Potential Brother. . .

I was hit by a hit and run driver on the highway and lucky I survived, I have a steel rods in my leg and a smashed pelvis. I was in the hosptial for 2 weeks. Missouri valley called me while I was there, nothing like adding salt to the wound, I graduated from lineschool 5 months ago. Its been a lifetime dream to become a lineman. Do you think I still have a chance? Will they call again? The doctor said I will have a full recovery and I should be able to do everything again. Do You think I still have a shot? reply would be great

Posted by: MNhockeyfiend
I hope you can help me. I realize this is a lineman board but I'm having a really hard time finding any info relating to my problem. I moved to Missouri from Minnesota about nine years ago. I'm currently and electricians apprentice and am studying to take the journeyman's test here but Missouri doesn't have a state-wide test so taking it here in Springfield means it may not be recognized in KC or St. Louis. I plan on moving back to Minnesota soon and I'm trying to find out if Minnesota has a state-wide test and if I'm wasting my time trying to pass it here. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

yeah, they can mount the transformers on poles that would more than likely be more of an eyesore than your padmount. the system you have is far better than that i'm assuming, unless you want lines all around your home and with that comes the risks of failure and storm damage.

Internal Treason? Someone's going to Lose!
October 25, 2004 07:11:40 AM
Posted by: Concerned Brother
Internal Treason? Someone's going to lose! From: Concerned Brother Date: October 25, 2004 Time: 09:07 PM -0700 IBEW members, My Local has a problem and I was hoping to reach out to others who may have experienced the same. The President of my Local has charged my Business Manager. The charges are supposed misappropiation of funds. The intent of the Business Manager has been to improve the lot of our Hall. He has not profited from his actions nor caused harm to the IBEW. So the question arises, "What is the intent of the President? Sad state of affairs and I was just wondering if anybody has ever witnessed such treasoness action before? Rumor has it, the President had divulged this sick plan during the election campaign of our Local to a member that would admit this and take a polygraph if doubted. Does a Business Manager get removed by the International if he erred in procedure but his actions were nobel and the outcome benefitted the Local? Does a President get removed by the International if he fails to bring attention to the Business Manager any possible errors in procedure that he is aware of. Should he not explain his intent of why he is pressing charges when he could have cooperated with and not work in conflict with the Business Manager? (Constitution violation!) What about the witness to the Presidents' verbal premeditated plan! Would he have an opportunity to voice this to the International? My apologies Brothers. This situation has nothing to with your Local. The IBEW minuteman is down and I needed to reach out for support. We are trying to improve our Hall but there are obviously others who do not respect the wishes of the membership who voted overwhelmingly for our present Business Manager. If you have any ideas please share. Solidarity!

you both should get in touch with your local outside lineman union. a one year school might be worth it if they have a really good placement with a utility. There is no way you should spend two years in school to become an outside lineman. The union will pay you as you learn instead of you paying a school. Of course, there will be alot of travel involved so you have to be prepared for that with the union. this link below will help you find the union you might want to work for. good luck www.ibew.org

Yo Max!! I don't know if you remember me. I was a student of yours at NLC in '97. My name is Jason Clause. I am wondering where you are and what you are doing now. I really would love to talk to you. I need your help if at all possible! Here is a quick rundown of me: After graduating NLC, I worked rat for a couple of years. I worked fer beans and was treated like shit. I finally contacted some of my classmates that were in the JATC in Cali. I entered the Cal-NV Apprenticeship in mid '99. Since then, I have had my share of problems, which has forced me to put my apprenticeship on hold. Now I get back, and a year later, I am terminated from program, for reasons I wont go into online. I'm pretty pissed bcuz as a brotherhood I figured these guys would pick a brother up, not kick him in the teeth while he's down. I dunno what to do man. I am 6th step with over 7000 hours. I am lacking maybe bout 3 or 400 hours hot time. They said I could reapply, and I did,but I am not willing to start over. Who knows how long it will take or if they will even take me back. I consider myself a good hand, and my evals have been good, but they did not care about my performance in the trade. They were only concerned with my personal life. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated. Can I get on with a utility such as SMUD? Will they honor my hours? Can I go to another JATC jurisdiction without having to start over? If u will call me I can go into more detail. Besides, I don't have a computer. I am currently online at a library in Carlsbad. My access is limited. However I will check this message board tomorrow. This text goes for all linehands who may be able to help. I'm not a bad guy! Just made a couple mistakes. Willing to do what it takes to be a lineman! That's all I wanna do! I love this work! Refuse to go rat! I am union an proud! Please help! my cell # 951 313 3266 Thanx all my bruthas from otha muthas. be safe out there.

Here we go again, Niagra Mohawk a National Grid company located in N.Y. is currently in contract negotiations with IBEW 97. The union is in a battle to keep union jobs for outsourcing. The company plans to contract out much of the work done by members of local, as was done with their sister company in Massachusett. Since National Grids arrival in the US many union members have seen thier jobs eliminated as the Foreign Owned Holding Company earns record profits. We wish Local 97 the best of luck.

hey Zapper, I never said that it requires an emergency on their part...I have met lineman that have been doing this for over 20 years with only a class B-I need a class A to climb a pole and bank transformers? I'd be more than happy to get a class A if I could...no mule with a trailer means no class A. The outfit that I'm working with doesn't have a semi and no one around will rent to an individual. Bottom line, YOU TELL ME HOW TO GET A CLASS A!!!

ANYONE WHO FILLS OUT THE APPLICATION FOR AN APP. PROGRAM READS ON THERE THAT YOU NEED A FEW REQUIREMENTS PRIOR TO EVER BEING CONSIDERED. I.E. HIGH SCHOOL (OR G.E.D.) DIPLOMA, DRIVER LICENSE (C.D.L. PREFERRED), CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH AND WILLINGNESS TO TRAVEL. YOU KNEW THAT YOU NEEDED A C.D.L. TO PULL TRAILERS JUST BECAUSE YOU DRUG YOUR FEET DOESN'T CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY ON THEIR PART!

everybody out there knows that there are good and bad hands on both sides of the fence...that goes w/o saying. for the union ape who got pissed that i said "white ticket", i'll say it again, if you meet the criteria and pass the halls examination then do it. just because someone does not go thru the jatc,(i did by the way) does not mean they don't know their ass from last tuesday. there are a many of union hands that make trivial mistakes that cost either themselves or the app's life. also, your not right in sayin that white tickets can only build and erect steel, if they show proof of hot hours and it can be verified by the b.a. then they can work anything they want, how do do you think so many people travel and work storms? white tickets drag an outfit and go to the hall of the damage area and clear out w/ the first contractor and go to work, after the storm they go back wherever they came from. i don't approve or like it, but it happens. bottom line to what i'm sayin is there are damn good hands that are non-union tryin to get into the halls, if we don't let em or don't try to recruit em then we as a whole will suffer. so whoever i piss off, i don't care, i'm lookin out for my halls future screw anybody who thinks that non-union hands can't teach an app. i myself have learned alot from a few damn good rats, now they are my brothers. work safe
Be safe and don't let the money get you killed.

I just read some of these messages and I could'nt believe it. I did my service in the Airforce and yes I did go to lineman school. when I finished my 11 years(medical discharge, I fell from a 45 footer and screewed my foot up) I went to work for John Ward, Utilities construction co, Charleston, South Carolina. I thought I knew the shit, he put me on the right track and today I own my safety and the lives of everyone that has ever worked for me to John. I now have 19 years in the business and(knock on wood) no burns or fatalities on any of my crews. EVER. I did look into Iraq and I found all of the job offerings. Did I forget to mention ? I am also an Army veteran (combat, Granada). If you think making all of the money is worth it, look around you and look at that child of yours or your brother or sisters. I've been there and done that. Let them build their own grid, they dont want us there as we dont need to be there. Also, listen to your supervisor, he may just be your last defense in this life. May God bless all of you as you persue our field of the limited and the few. Remember, we are the best of the best.

So you were in the Apprenticeship for a year and a half and now your ready to challange the test and be a journeyman Lineman? listen son, your apprenticeship really does not start until you top out, Your fuckin crazy if you think you ready...your like a guy going around saying he's a Marine, but he never went through boot camp... do your time like every other hard working Ape then claim the title. You may pass the test, but them crew boys will run you off faster than shit and make you feel like a dumb ass. but good luck, ill be lookin for ya.
Complete the apprenticeship

I was just kinda scanning through and was reading some things that really bothered me. It scares the shit outa me hearing people talk about white tickets signing the books at the local hall as a Journeyman lineman like it's no big deal.. "challenge the test and go to work?" what the fuck kinda shit is that? If you attempt to do that you better have no doubt in your mind and heart that you can do all the work as a journeyman and keep the apprentice safe at all times. If your just lookin for a big paycheck and to go around at the bars and tell everybody your a journeyman lineman you better think again god dammit... Im not being an ass Im just frustrated. Apply for a Union apprenticeship and finish it out and proudly call yourself a journeyman Lineman. And as far as I know, White tickets can only build and erect steel, they cannot work distribution as a Journeyman Lineman, am I right?

About Iraq, My buddy is going over fairly soon, but the list of applicants is long. The term is 1 year, 1 month on one month off and USAF will fly you anywhere in the world for your time off but as soon as you enter the states your money is taxed. The deal is 250,000 tax free for 6 months work. I will try and get the name of the contractor.
