Get on the website ibew.org and find your local union hall. Contact them about getting on as a groundman and tell them of your intentions about the ap program. Hard work, getting your feeling hurt, and diligence is the key. If your not up for that, don't waste their time. But if you are ready, the pay-off will be worth the trouble. Good luck potential future brothers. Don

Have him visit the nearest union hall and look into testing out. A lot has happened in the industry in the last 20 years so he may have to take an apprentice position for a while to brush up. I have seen that work. Otherwise, he may decide to sign as a groundman. I know a couple of cases similar to yours that, that worked for those guys also and being older guys they were happy not having as much responsibility but getting better than average pay. Just some ideas. hope they helped. Good luck.
Traveling lineman, hasn't worked as a lineman for awhile

Posted by: KentuckyWoman
My husband is interested in a job as a traveling emergency lineman. He hasn't worked as a lineman for about 20 years, but was a trouble department lineman for about 9 years in the past. The placement company doesn't seem bothered by this. Here's what's really weird - LG&E has wiped out all the records in 1995 of previous employees who weren't drawing pensions - this done when the company was bought out. I've dug through some old tax forms and found W2 forms showing he worked at LG&E and the personnel people at LG&E sound like they want to help. How would my husband get certified now or how do they deal with traveling a lineman from state to state?

Definitely wants to now. But with not knowing outcome yet, should she? Any policy saying she should now, not aware of? What might happen? PLEASE ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL!

Thanks again john!! When i get back to the states, i'm going in "red horse" down at nellis in nevada. I'll mostly be deployed the entire time of my two years there, but they do alot of hot work so i should get alot more experience than i already have. How long did it take for your gi bill to activate? I've heard different things. If i get in with a company thats in the union, do they enroll me in apprentice training, or how does that work? This may seem like a stupid question, but i really have no idea how that whole thing works. Thanks again, Mark.

I almost forgot to tell you that if you signed up for the G.I. bill, the apprenticeship program is an approved program so you'll get a monthly check for that plus your regular pay. I got like $800 a month for like six months then $600 for a few months and then like $300 a month until I finished the program.

It sounds like you are getting some good experience, I was stationed at whiteman afb in missouri and it was mostly underground and i went to Saudi in 98-99 and did alot of underground also. I've worked in Caifornia which was awesome. Your are in your hooks just about every day. They rubber gove 4kv off the pole and stick 12kv and 16kv. Out of a bucket they glove 4kv and wear full sleeves and gloves on 12kv and 16kv. You can make alot of cash there, I made like 90k in six months. The downfall to CA is the cost of living. $250k would get you a little crack house in the ghetto. But the experience is awesome and you get to do storm work. We don't get that here at 769 because the utility sends their own guys to do that. While in California i talked with alot of tramps (guys who travel and do line work) and they said if you can work in California, Phoenix, and Chicago you could just about work anywhere in the U.S. and be comfortable. Don't know much about Chicago besides it gets really cold there. So I would recommend locals 1245 and 47 in California, local 769 in Phoenix, and Chicago (don't know the local). I know here in Phoenix we are working five to seven days a week. This is a stick local currently but we just went to rubber glove, so it will be a few months for all of that to go into effect. Hope this helped.
thank you john.

Wow, thanks john. As to your question about my base, it's mostly overhead. We climb as much as we can, but it just gets to damn cold in N.D. sometimes. We do alot both new construction and maintnence work. We have 41.6 coming in and our distribution voltage is 7200/12470. As for working hot, we mostly do it, if were going to at all, with hotsticks. I've only worked hot with my gloves and sleeves a handfull of times. As for running a handline, we do, but only where we can use them. Mostly, were using a bucket truck in conjunction with a guy on hooks, so we don't need one. The knot tying, i think i'll be ok on. We have two jorneyman lineman civilians that work in our shop and they are sticklers about doing it right. Currnetly i'm stationed in Minot, N.D., but am deployed right now. I just got orders to las vegas, so when i come back from here i go there. I think i'll be finished when my tour is up though. As for your question about where i would work; i would go wherever i can get good experience, and can learn something. If you have any more advice for me as to where i should apply or who to talk to, i would appreciate it. Thanks John.

If you want to get started with some credit for your experience I would go with a union outside line construction contractor. I know here in AZ the utilities don't give any credit toward an apprenticeship so you'd have to start out at ground zero which isn't so bad, it would just mean you'd get a good dose of transformer/electrical theory and book work in general but you would really know your stuff. As to where if you went with a contractor and say they gave you 3000 hours credit, you may not be up to speed compared to some of the other 3000 hour apprentices in the program. But that all depends on what kind of experience you've had in the AF. Is your base mainly overhead or underground? Do you do new construction or mostly maintenance? Hotstick or glove? Run a handline much? Know you basic knots (bowline, clove hitch, timber hitch, grunt knot, bowline in a bight, running bowline, grape vine)? Knowing some of this stuff will help you with you interview. I also would recommend you apply before you get out because sometimes there is up to a year waiting list to even get an apprenticeship but with some experience I think you have the uppper hand. Where are you stationed now and where do you plan go to work? Wherever you end up I would look into the local union halls for the area you plan to go to see what the job outlook is like. I know this was alot of info, hope it helped you out. I've been in the same boat you are in now but I didn't have anyone to help out. Any more questions feel free.

I was a lineman in the Air Force also and I'm currently a journeyman lineman out of local 769 in Phoenix. I don't recommend you take a journeyman test and try to work as a jouneyman in the civilian world. I went that route and I had a pretty rough start. In the AF you are more like an apprentice and have alot of learning to do that you don't get in the AF. Once pointed in the right direction, I got an apprenticeship and was credited 3000 hours for a 7000 hour program. That is definitely the way to go because this trade in not something you want to bs your way through and in the end you will come out a way better lineman. Any more questions just let me know. Good luck, John

As a journeyman, I get on the norm 50 hours a week, 5/10's. When work slows, a third of the year, i get 40 hours a week, 4/10's. I do occasionally have to go out of town 50 to a hundred miles out for work. One or twice a year for a week to three weeks. As an apprentice, you will see similar hours regularly. However, you will be traveling some as you will be directed to work for different contractors to get experience necessary to complete your ap program. Most generally I expect you will be home more than your current 60 hour week. No guarantees though. Good luck be safe.

I have read some of your posts and I'm assuming you are in the Phoenix area..I have some questions if you don't mind. I'm currently in the process of applying for the apprentice program with Local 769..I'm waiting on paperwork from Kansas. I was just wondering, what are your average work hours per week? How much out of town work are you doing? I'm currently working for a company where it's a minimum of 60 hours a week, and weeks out of town..and I'm looking for the opposite of that. I don't mind hard work, I want a good living, but I also want time with my family. Am I in the wrong place? Also, during your apprenticeship, is the work steady? Are you able to have any medical insurance? Thanks for your time. Hopefully, a future little brother!

Get a letter of recommendation from your immediate supervisor. Take that to the local outside Line construction hall of the I.B.E.W. Sign the books as a journeyman and take the test. If you have four years as a lineman in the air force, you should have little trouble getting work. You might try phoenix, AZ., Local 769. Local 77 out of Seattle, or Local 66 out of Houston, TX, all three of these are in need of lineman. Good luck and be safe future brother in the IBEW. . . Don

My name is Mark. I'm currently in the USAF working as a lineman, and my enlistment is coming to an end. I was wondering, if anyone knows how i go about applying to become a lineman on the outside. Do i still have to go to line school, even though i've already been. I have 4 years of expirience and have made it to journeyman lineman, but that's in the air force. I'm looking for some info then on who to contact, or what should i be doing to make this happen? Thanks.

Help needed. . . Apprentice. .

I know that as an apprentice, that daily life is frustrating. Keep heart and keep your long range goal intact. I don't know what local that your working out of but. . . I do know that as a contractor working in Phoenix, AZ. We are at basically at the mercy or whim of the utilities here as to what updates or standards changes that the utilities make as to each and every connection, pole riser or ug cabinet that we work on. Sometimes an inspector will be up to date and want things one way while another will want things done the old way as of only a quarter ago. It's possible that your hall may be seeing this same type situation, in their defense, or it may be local politics. It happens sometimes. The bottom line is that you are faced with this question, pleasing your journeyman, and trying to do the best you can and everybody knows it that you care about. So keep your chin up, complete your apprenticeship, and then travel with your JOURNEYMAN's ticket and chhose the best place for you. Good luck and play safe. . . Don

I start line school in June at Avista utilities; I have been climbing for about 2 months now on and off. I cut-out for the first time yesterday and dropped about 2-3 feet. Very scary for the first time! It happened when I was coming down from the top. Why did this happen? The Forman I climb with said my knees were to close to the pole when I was coming down how do I prevent cut out from happening?

We had an insodent involving a PCB in a substation that would not open after a short on the line. This is a 4.1 kv system, with PCB breakers tha are controled by a SCADA system and SEL relays. The fault was caused by two lineman working on reinsolating a structor and getting a phase in contact with a ground. The PCB breaker was placed on non reclosing prior to the work stating. The PCB did not open and the 7.5 mg transformer fuses blew after 30 seconds. My question is what testing should we do to the PCB breakers and control equipment to find out why the PCB did not open? Olease E mail me with an answer at dlammers3@cox.net I want to make sure that we will not experance this again. No one was hurt this time.

Alternative Shifts
February 16, 2006 12:24:49 AM
Posted by: Load Buster
I am curently working for a midwest utility that has over 450,000 customers on it's system. There is a plan by management to staff 24/7 in addition to troubleman. The proposed plan may include alternative workshifts 4/10s,2/16's & 8,etc.I know the union has fought hard for 8 hour work days but the alternative shifts seem to be attractive to the majority of lineman in our local. Is there anyone out there that has experience with alternative shifts and the pro's & con's of what this type of scheduling can create. The issues of safety, overtime availability, and non-emergency work performed after dark, are some of the issues of concern. This type of scheduling is an attempt to cutback overtime. It just seems the problems and issues that need to be addressed far out weigh the benefits.

February 10, 2006 11:34:52 PM
Posted by: haranimal
Just to let everyone know that Comed is a terrible company to work for and if you apply for the posted job, expect intimidation and harrassment on a daily basis from your management "team". They go out of their way to break your negotiated contract daily. This means they will force you to do regular work in inclement weather despite a contractual clause, by calling it emergency work. This company will also try to hide the fact that contractors are working 58 hour weeks in your area just to avoid having to pay you OT. The Arcos callout system is flat out ridiculous. The company wants you to be ready to work and waiting by the phone without pay. They are advertising for workers because Comed employees are leaving in droves. Don't come here.
