NLRB organizations

Remember when labor organizations where a group of skilled workers representing themselves? In today's environment, most organized workers are mere whores for national labor leaders and big business. Most companies realize this and the fact that labor leaders can be bought off on issues that will effect the fiscal outcome with many contract agreements. It's not just the electrical workers, but almost any national labor organization. I really think we have to start over with smaller in house labor groups. By signing on with the large labor groups the smaller individual groups loose power and natitional can bully them with little recourse by the individual. Don't agree...go reread your contract, then test it by trying to pass a proposal that labor leaders won't support, even though an overwhelming number of workers (the ones that are supposed to be represented) support. The national labor leaders aren't there to support you, You the worker are there to support them. National will tell you what you need, your not supposed to know for yourself.

The IBEW as it stands now is a good old boy network more into protecting their own than worring about the ones that put them in office and pay their salary. 160 IBEW members in Local 317 were eboarded and fined on orders of Pres. Ed Hill of the I/O. The job had problems over the months and the I/O never addressed the problem, but backed the contractor at every turn. This is your chance to take back the union. There is a rally in front of the I/O in Washington DC April 14, 2003. Anybody that can attend should. The I/O says the silent majority is happy with the present system. I say they are so use to the present leadership they just gave up. Prove me wrong by joining the other website discussions and voiceing your oppion one way or the other. Let the other brothers now you are listening.

Their is a petition for a referendum vote on amending our Constitution to OMOV for our International Officers. This petition has been sponsored by L.U.#666 Richmond, Va. and a letter was mailed out to ALL the locals notifying them of the petition, enclosed with the letter was a copy of the proposed Constitutional Amendment. I'm just curious how many of you have heard about the proposal before now. There are several web sites discussing the matter so I have listed a few of them here.I hope some of you will visit these sites and put your 2 cents in. If not I will continue to visit this site and try to keep you Brothers up on whats going on. http://groups.msn.com/OMOV http://onemanonevote.com http://ibewminuteman.com

Ten-Four on the content Spark. It's a sad day when you go to your BA with a gripe only to find out that the Local's legal dept. may drop it because it's not politically attract to the Local's management. The day Lineworkers, that founded and support this organization, let big business decide how their elected representives should vote is the day Lineworkers need to elect new representation. Whether through a new labor organization, or restructuring of the old. It's due time we have folks representing us that know the difference between a picture of a storm ,and the reality of glovimg off a pole during one.

OMOV The Time Has Come Just as American politics has transformed into American royalty so has the leadership of our great Union (all Unions for that matter). We now have Union leaders in Washington D.C. (coincidence?) that are so far removed from OUR way of life that they really believe in their occluded little minds that they serve us. Before an Officer hits the aristocracy of the International Office they have been removed from the reality of toiling for our families. They interact and socialize with the haves (N.E.C.A.), undergoing a gradual mitosis eventually becoming the beast they once despised. And through this mitosis they justify in their occluded little minds that their vast knowledge is eminently above our mediocre minds, the have-nots. They spread their cancer down to the Local level where N.E.C.A. and the Local Union actually share the same roof in many Locals. Officers’ new social circles are that of politicians and contractors. They become commodious with their new majestic stature. Just as the once strong independent man enters prison only to exit the town’s biggest proponent of oral copulation, so these “representatives†acclimate to the subtleness of intercourse and eventually enjoy the full stroke. They become engulfed with perceived vast knowledge believing they are divine. And then comes these everyday members, who in OUR leaders’ minds are infantile and unmindful, expecting understanding and support. This gives anecdotal entertainment while having dinner with a large contractor explaining he needs even more from the masses. They believe if they convince Us, which predominantly has been done, that WE are lucky to have the few scraps we do, this little mirage will sustain itself. As long as WE watch the base of the fire WE can’t see the gas being poured from atop out of the corporate jets flying overhead. And believe me Brothers and Sisters I could go on indefinitely. However I must get to my point. The smoke has been partially cleared by many Brothers and Sisters specifically two in particular, Mike Garling and Mike Watson, actually giving us a small light at the end of the tunnel. They, and others, have courageously begun a campaign of redemption. ONE MEMBER ONE VOTE. It is not a fix-all but rather a large first step to reclaiming what has been stolen from US…OUR UNION…What the internet has brought us is knowledge which angers OUR “handlers†because oppression can only be delivered through the vehicle of ignorance. Education eradicates their methods. Now instead of seeing “isolated†incidents explained away by the I.O. from a script prepared by their “handlersâ€, we now see it is a plan of action to deny, diminish and destroy what OUR Union ONCE WAS. It is not too little too late. Rather a “LAST STAND†that cannot be denied or ignored. OUR International through knowledge and education is being attacked from many fronts. For us to succeed we must continue. Instead of keeping the I.O. busy putting out small fires across the country it is time for an all out inferno. Sorry, I’ll try to close. IT IS NOW OR NEVER. IT IS TOGETHER OR NOT AT ALL. IT WILL REQUIRE A SHORT TERM SACRIFICE FOR A LONG TERM GAIN. AND IT WILL REQUIRE YOUR HELP NOW.

Several policies on this. Some companies have a sched that crews share for call out availability. You may have a day or two or a weekend a month that you or your crew will be required to be available with short notice. I have not heard of 100% manditory call out availability for all crews at the same time. May be because of Lineman shortage, I can't fathom a company doing this all the time. Possible law suit if you are hourly contract empolyee and not compensated for manditory availibilty. Check with labor attorney in your area, but becareful if you are not represented by a NLRB agreement.

SEVEN LINEMAN FROM OUR DISTRICT WERE SUSPENDED TODAY INDEFINETLY, BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T COME IN ON A CALL. SOME WERE ON VACATION(NO EXCUSE) TWO WERE GOING TO A WEDDING (NO EXCUSE) ONE OF OUR UNION BROTHERS SON HAS A CANCEROUS BRAIN TUMOR (15 YRS OLD) AND HAD HIS FIRST CHEMO THAT DAY THE COMPANY CALLED AND THEY SAID IT WAS NO EXCUSE!!!

Ive been looking into getting an apprenticeship and it seems like no one knows how to get in. I finially Talked to a guy at Local 17 in Southfeild Michigan and He said they take applications 1 week a year in May. Then if you get in you go to a school in Ohio for 3 weeks and they place you with a company. Then you have class 1 night a month at the union hall. I've looked into the 2 linemans schools and the summer course starts in May so right now I am basically trying to decide if I should go to the school or hold out and try my luck at the apprenticeship. I kinda figure If i do the school thing for 4 months Ill come out knowing more from the get go. What do you guys think??

Hey pickone I believe you but I need some proof. What school are you planning on attending? Have you looked for njatc.com in your search? Go for the construction apprenticeship!!!! After your interview you WILL be told the results and know what to work on or what to do!!! I suspect that you've talked to a couple utilities and maybe had an interview, don't let them dictate your future kid because they'll have you in their pocket before they let you even get an apprenticeshipin their fair-haired utility. I'll probably attend a school soon and then work for whoever until I can get with the union...this way I can get some clockhours under my belt and get things rolling. I would like to make a clarification that I was not complaining about anyone's kid getting a job because of their name...who cares how you get the job as long as you do that's what matters. This field is not like a cushion office job...if you can't/don't want to be in the field then you won't last, so the way that I see it anyone who has the job is there because they want to be.

USA boys "r crap" ???

I have always been open to constructive criticism, it's extremely helpful with improving and perfecting one's professional abilities. Perhaps the Lineman who is not "crap" could substantiate these tremendous inadaquate actions that the "r crap" boys here in the USA are performing. If the Lineman in the USA are that dangerous, this wisdom you pocess may save hundreds of lives. Who knows...you may even win a humanitarian award for all the accidents your great wisdom would prevent. So being the professional lineman that your statement implies you are, most would consider your contribution imperative ( you know...in the interest of safety and professionalism. You're familiar with those terms, are'nt you?) So...how about it, I have my pen and pad ready to copy>

I'm assuming that the last post that you made was in reply to my post. I have already taken the "necessary" steps via phone book to get the interviews and such with 3 different places now (2 of which unions). They said that they have a placement list that they put me on-where I stand on this list I don't know and never will. However, I don't plan on sitting around for the next 2 years waiting for a phone call...I will attend a lineman school in Jan. and be proactive about this becuase I am serious about it. I actually want to be part of a lineman union such as IBEW however, if they don't pick me up after I get done with school then I will take the work where I can get it. I'm not blaming anyone because I haven't been picked up yet-I'm just calling it like I see it...I know of a couple of guys who in their own words have told me that the only reason that they got the job was because of their last name and I don't blame them or the system that's just the way it is. Since I have done everything that I am able to do up to this point the next logical step is to go to lineman school.

Hey partner I figure your just blowing of a little bit of steam, but I have something to say as far as lineman schools and your wanting to get in the apprenticeship (union I hope).Save your money if the school is not recognized by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC). Simply look in any phonebook or better since your on the web, IBEW.COM or look for local unions in your afore-mentioned phonebook. Put in the time and the so called leg work and there you go..... the possibilities are endless, just like my so-called one finger typing and imperfect spelling. Stop blaming your self and worse the system for any real or otherwise short-comings. If your for real I hereby challange you to do what is required to become an union apprentice in a real apprenticeship. Sometimes things take time and IT will happen if your serious. I'm not quite sure why some people on this board are putting down lineman schools. Trying to get in an apprentice program is like pulling teeth. I am 25 years old, have a strong background in electricity and a good work record...I have been rock climbing for several years so height does not bother me. I am 225lbs all muscle-deadlift 400lbs for reps and can run a mile in under 7 minutes, so the physical conditioning is there. Yet noboby will put me in an appreciate program...why? Because I don't have the right last name and I don't have any experience-no experience because no job-no job because no experience. The only way that it seems one can get their foot in the door is to go to a school such as NLC or SLC. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other 4 month short term schools out there that have a good placement rating such as NLC or SLC. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I am hoping to also start a website for wives of linemen. I will post a message when it is ready.

I agree with drifter. I have seen this program in use but was already using jatc. But the mjts program is great for remote locations as , in those days, most everyting was loked at and tested via FAX, with a visitor every so often to check progress. Usually a near retired lineman that enjoyed sharing his knowledge. Good job Drifter for remembering them and good luck Line Supt. . . drwelect

Hi Justin, I recommend that you put your apprenticeship ap into more than one resource. Be prepared to travel. The effort will be worth the trouble. Just one note, stay with a union apprenticeship OR go to www.jatc.com and look at those avenues so that you will learn good work habits and safe work practices for the long haul. If you get a rep for rat, it will be years showing yourself good even if you are indeed good or better. Diligence is the key. . .

I am 24 years old. and I am from Tennessee around the knoxville area I started doing line work at 18 years old right out of high school.I worked with a non union national power line construction contracter company.I learned enough about the work to realize that i want to do this work for the rest of my life. However, after 3 years I was still doing ground work.My foreman and myself both demanded for almost a year that i be put in the apprentice program but it never happened.I felt like i was being used as a peeon. so i quit.I really wanted to get work with a power company. But here i am almost 4 years later with no line job.I quickly found out much politics play a role in power companies. I am currently working as an apprentice electrician with bigest and best company in my state doing comm. and ind. jobs. But while electrician work is something i would love t do on the side. line work is where my heart is.I have tried for almost 4 years to get a job with a power company, and in about 2 weeks i have an intrview with my home town power company for APP. lineman position. They are going to only take 1. and i want this more than anything. could you offer any advice to help me take this job. or what can i do to help myself on down the road. times running for me and i would really like to here ideas from someone who can help me reach my goals. thank you very much.
