I really don't know anything about NLC in Idaho so I can't comment on the value of their $10k program. However, I am a graduate of Northwest Iowa Comm. College's powerline program, which cost me about $5k. I would not be an IBEW Journeyman Lineman without the training I got At NCC. 14 of the 16 Guys in my class are also IBEW Journey man, the other 2 are not In the trade. Maybe it's not the NLC school's training but the people they are training???

Wages
December 14, 2001 08:40:55 AM
Posted by: Union Hand
Kiwi..The wage scale here for a first step apprentice is 70% of journeyman scale and pre apprentice is 60%. SMUD is probably close. That comes to about 17-21 dollars. Remember though the pay off is when you top out. Good luck with your test.
Yipe What Lesson??

What lesson of hate are you refering to C-boy? The only one to mention the "H" word is you. So perhaps it is your thought process that is skewed.Since the definition of synapsis is;the region of contact across which nerve impulses are transmitted in one direction only;and I am one way in regard to non-union; I feel my synaptic process is just fine. You must be in a Right to Work(for less) state because when I work storm there are no non-union linemen or contractors. Non-union is not allowed on the property. I DO NOT hate non-union I just have no respect for them,I DO take exception to your inference that I or apparently anyone that does not agree with you as a hate monger. Perhaps spouting ,God bless America, gives you that right. Wait a minute, isn't that perpetuating discrimination and hate? To think that God would only bless America? I say GOD BLESS US ALL even you , union or non! Anyway don't try to get into a battle of wits with me C-boy because I won't battle an unarmmed foe.The main point to start with was that these so called lineman schools are a waste of time and money, then someone got their panties in a knot over someones use or mis-use of the word rat. Pretty insecure if you ask me.

Ok got some info on NLC, 90% placement 99.9% non union positions, costs 10 grand...basicly they suck... anyone out there know the wages for pre apprentice ?? or apprentice?? got a family to feed and knowing that would be great, anyone know how long you are an apprentice??? Great Message board... taking the pre-apprentice test this saturday!!! wish me luck
Info on Pre apprentice position
December 12, 2001 03:05:26 AM
Posted by: SMUD Lineman
Take the SMUD pre apprentice test. If you go to that lineschool you'll waste about $10,000 and won't even be guaranteed a job anywhere. SMUD needs pre apprentices and if you pass the initial pre-qualifying you'll go right to a two-week climbing school and be on your way to an apprenticeship. Going to the line school will only guarantee a shot at working with rat contractors back in Mississippi somewhere.

I am in the process applying for the North Western Lineman College (I know some of you don't really liek that school) and I was really excited about it, then a week ago I got a letter from SMUD saying that they want me to test for their Pre Apprentice Lineman Position (which I applied for 7 months ago) so now I am stuck, I cannot find any information on Pre Apprentice Lineman any info would help.Any Info would be great!!!!! yep, here we go again. another lesson in hate!!! i am glad you all find it funny when someone showes his lack of synaptic processes.don't get me wrong, i"m glad that you have a union job, i just think that if someone gets on with the union, he will automaticaly become your "brother". we are all in this together, and i hope that this gap between union and nonunion can be bridged, just like on storm duty. on storms you have both sides working together, for a common goal of restoring power to "our customers". i hope and pray that each and every one of you has a safe, and productive career! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Hi wire, sorry bro but I have to agree with Cowboy. You shouldn't call the non union boys rats. By doing so you are doing a grave injustice to one of our greatest mammals, the rat!So be properly chastized Hi wire ape,you are a bad, baad boy. Off to bed and no supper for you.LOL:) By the way Cowboy,I do NOT consider the non union person as my fellow worker, more like an anchor or weight I have to pack along with me.You know, kind of an attachment I would rather not have. Like aaa...hmmm let me see..hmmm I got it! Like a scab.. yeah that's it! A scab! HEY HI WIRE use that word maybe you won't be so unAmerican, Brother.Hey now there is a word I'll bet ol' Cowboy don't use much and he will prob'ly never hear from me...Brother. Anyways keep your head cut in and your feet out of the grounds Brother APE.

I think that your labling non union workers as rats, is a form of discrimination that rivals any hate crime out there!! America, land of the free!!You know, that you cant use the "n" word, but you can call someone a rat just for exercising his right to choose. In my humble opinion, i think that you weaken the nation by hating your fellow workers! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Union Hand, your exactly right. One of the biggest rip-offs is Northwest Linemans College in Meridian,Idaho. By the time a guy has completed their course he has spent about $10,000 for four months of training. Then the only employers that they can guarantee work with is outfits like Red Simpson and Irby. They are pretty much a supplier to rat contractors. The JATC's won't even visit the school.

Hey there guys,is it just me ?? I don't understand these young fellas going to a so called Lineman School, paying what I assume is a goodly chunk of change for the privelege to then apply for an apprenticship that is the REAL training in becoming a Journeyman Lineman or a journeyman in any of the trades.I know it has been 30+ years since I started in this trade but how about going down to the Union Hall and getting an application to get into the apprentice program? Thats what I did in about 1970 and guess what? It worked. The same plan WILL work today! I know it will because I am on the Exam commitee at my local and have given a dozen or so Journeyman tests just this year to young men who had applied in this manner aprox. four years ago. Other Apprentices that topped out started with various power companys as meter readers, chipper operators, etc. and paid there dues,so to speak, until a suitable apprentice opening became available.I know that I am going to be chastised for saying this, but I believe these so called lineman schools are a waste of money. Especially if ya caint get a lineman job after ya gradiate. Anywho...thats the most typing I've done since high school. Well tap 'er light boys and I'll see ya on the big job!

Did they teach you how to free climb or just strap the pole? The last two guys from that college we hired weren't very well trained. One couldn't make it through our two week climbing school and the other couldn't tell the difference between a 9/16ths and a 5/8ths drill bit. I hear that there are plenty of cable TV positions open, might be a good place for you to start. Didn't that college offer you job placement assistance? (SMUD Lineman)

We in England are appalled at the horrific loss of life in Washington and New York and will support the USA but on a down note we hope that Americans will now stop supporting fanaticle groups throughout the world like the IRA who cause so much terror in Northern Ireland and the UK. It is people that supply money and arms that are as much to blame as the persons commiting the crimes.

There are openings for apprentices in California. PG and E, SMUD, some of the smaller muni's are hiring. However, the last kid that came out of Northwest Lineman's College couldn't free climb, just strapped the pole and couldn't hang a set of ten foot double heavy arms at one of the utility's two-week pre-apprentice school. As I understand it they aren't even teaching them kids how to climb properly or work efficiently on the pole. I hope that they are not filling you full of theortical BS as opposed to teaching you how to climb, work aloft, set poles and tie knots. It sure would be a bummer to spend 10K on training that won't guarantee you a job.

I am a master electrician that recently ran into a question on a bulliten board as to how you can get three phase from just two phases on a power pole? I have seen this at one site where the pole had two phases, two fuses, two transformers and a ground supplying a three phase motor! Is there a web site that shows how this connection is made? Regards, Steve Welch.

My name is Brady and im hoping somebody might be able to tell me what company is hiring apprentices, anywhere in the U.S. I worked for Puget Sound Energy for 4 years. I started as a Meter Reader, Electrical Mapper (OH-UG-UM) and finally Engineering Planner Major Projects Distribution. I left the company because they no longer offer an apprenticeship. I will be graduating the Northwest Lineman College on August 23rd. Anyone with information on an apprenticeship it would be greatly appreciated. BradyZegers@hotmail.com
