Do your research on lineman schools. The best way to find out if they are worth it is asking people that attended one and asking companies that are hiring their graduates. If it's a good school they will give you contacts from companies that hire their students.

For those looking to get into a lineman position here is a heads up. Not all halls are hiring halls. I went to my local IBEW hall this morning and was told "This is not a hiring hall. We do not have books to sign." So if the industry needs us so bad, why was I told this. This local does cover FirstEnergy and FirstEnergy does currently have positions open within their company for my area.

If it is a typical residence, likely the voltage at the meter is 120/240 single phase, 120/240 three phase, or if it is a large mansion it may be 120/208 three phase. At the top of the poles or the other side of the distribution transformer, the utility distribution side, the voltage varies from usually 2400 delta, to as high as 34,500 wye. That depends on the individual utility. Don't go near that! Deadly. . .

NLC (Northwest Linemans College)
October 23, 2005 01:43:42 AM
Posted by: mike
Ive seen alot of questions on here concering lineman college. I though i would just share some of my exper in hope that it might be helpful. I attended and successfully graduated from Northwest Linemans College in Meridian Idaho, The cost is about 5-6k dollars and the program last 16 weeks (tools included in that amount). I feel it was a great step towards a long career but the school isnt a cake walk. We had some ppl that didnt graduate! While at the college we had a number of recruitors come in and offer employment, from BPA to LADWP. There are alot of apprenticeships open out there and very aval but it takes some work to find them. Irby, Brink Electric, NJATC's, Red Simpson, Anderson Wood and Mustang hired ALOT of our class. The main thing is you have to be willing to travel while doing your apprenticeship. And dont take NOBODYS word for anything, Investigate the trade b4 making a decision, Goto a local PUD, ask to hang out with them for a day to get an idea of what kind of career your about to get in. Look it up on the internet and one thing you could do weather its Northwest Linemans College or any other is to ask for a contact list of students who have graduated. Talk to them, ask them what their school had to offer, how it helped them to get into the trade. If its a reputable school they should have a list of contacts for you. Ive been a journeyman for a few years now and the most important thing i can tell you is that the only person who knows whats best for you is you. Some people may offer advise on things that they have NO idea of how it works. Going to the hall and starting as a groundman is a great way to get into the trade and learn about linework. If that avenue works for you than thats great, but when i first started i tried that as well and the down time between jobs can be long. After NLC i got picked up pretty fast as an apprentice and havent been out of work since. Just look around, do ur research and do whats best for you, not what someone else thinks is best for you. Good luck to any1 who's persueing this and i hope that i have been able to help.

best thing to do is not go to some school and pay them 7 or 8 thousand go to your local union and c about getting on as a groundman then enter the apprenticeship. SELCAT is one of the top schools and that is who i am through in my apprenticeship and i am getting payed to learn not payin to learn and northwest and southeast lineman colleges u only learn a little not a lot your still only like a 2nd step apprentice thats my advice though

Go to ibew.org and find the website for your local union hall. get the address and sign the books to be a groundman and inquire about the apprentice program. I post ths same info periodically. I wiil state to you that. . . that is still the best training that you can get. Now is the time to get into the trade. So many of my fellow lineman are retiring or about to retire. My local union hall has 23 standing calls for journeymen right now here in phoenix, AZ. If you are seriously wanting in this trade and willing to commit all your resources to your future, jump on board. If your not serious, don't waste my time with your paperwork etc. Good luck little brothers. drwelect

Go to your local union hall and sign the books as a groundman first and inquire as to what it would take there to begin an apprenticeship. Here in Phoenix, AZ., you would have to or should put in 2000 (two thousand), hours as a groundman before you could be considered for the apprenticeship program. That works out to about a year. I know that watching an experienced lineman work, it looks like it would not be too complicated to do. but that is watching an experienced lineman. Line work takes an aggressive attitude to learn all the phases of your job, the equipment, and the tools to work safely and productively. Don't be discouraged if your serious. The industry needs you IF. . . you are ready to commit. Good luck, drwelect.

You need to either hire on as a groundman, or get "experience" at a skills/training center such as the one at LADWP in Los Angeles, CA.

hi, I have been working in the electrical field for a little over a year as a electricians assistant. My question is a question that has probably been asked many times before but here it is. How do I become a apprentice lineman? I have been very interested in the work since I started working as an electrician. Everytime I apply for a apprentice lineman position they always say I don't meet the qualifications. I thought being an apprentice meant they would teach you the trade but I've noticed that they want you to already have experience in the field which brings me back to the same question. How do I get experience if I can't get the job? Any suggestions would be great.
